David Pastrnak's Bruins Face Worrying Future Amidst Eastern Conference Competition
The Boston Bruins, led by forward David Pastrnak, rebounded from their 2015-16 playoff drought and fought their way back into the postseason in 2024-25. However, they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal by the Buffalo Sabres in six games.
What Happened?
Despite the efforts of David Pastrnak, the Bruins were nearly a non-playoff team masquerading as a playoff team last season. They had the 27th-best expected goal differential in the NHL at 5-on-5 and allowed the seventh-most high-danger chances at 5-on-5.
Why It Matters for David Pastrnak
The Bruins' general manager, Don Sweeney, has made several moves to improve the team, including acquiring Ivan Ivan from the Colorado Avalanche and re-signing Connor Clifton. However, the team lost 25 goals from their offensive attack when Viktor Arvidsson departed via free agency to the Detroit Red Wings.
What Comes Next?
According to Matt Larkin of The Daily Faceoff, the Bruins had far too many worrying underlying numbers that nearly caused them to miss the playoffs entirely. He wrote, "The Bruins were almost a non-playoff team masquerading as a playoff team this past season... Two players willed them into the postseason: goaltender Jeremy Swayman, who had a dominant campaign, and 100-point scorer David Pastrnak."
The good news is that those two players still wear the Spoked B. However, the bad news is that if goaltender Jeremy Swayman falters, the Bruins might slip by half a dozen points and end up fighting on the playoff bubble.
Don Sweeney implied that more moves could be coming, saying, "There easily could be" another defenseman traded. He believes his moves thus far have made the Bruins more balanced, but he has "some work to do" to continue adding to the team.
The Bruins will be without defenseman Charlie McAvoy for the first six games of the upcoming season due to a suspension. Sweeney said, "You just never know between now and when we start, and injuries, we just, it was an area we told you guys that we're going to address, and that's exactly what we tried to do."
The Bruins' future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: David Pastrnak's efforts will be crucial to the team's success.
